What to expect from a Shiatsu Treatment

A Shiatsu treatment lasts one hour, though I do also offer hour and a half sessions for those who prefer more time.

The initial consultation gives us the opportunity to discuss and understand your current picture of health, and reasons for wanting a Shiatsu session.

Before the first session I would ask you to complete a health questionnaire.

The treatment usually takes place on a padded futon on the floor, although it is possible to receive Shiatsu sitting on a chair if you are unable to lie down. You remain fully clothed throughout the treatment.

If I come to your home to give the treatment I will bring a futon and sheets, you would just need some clear space for me to work on the floor. If you would prefer to have the treatment from your bed that would work well too, whatever is most comfortable for you.

During the treatment I will use hand and finger pressure on the whole body, starting with the legs. The treatment feels enjoyable to receive and following a treatment you may feel deeply relaxed, yet invigorated. You can however feel quite tired initially, as the body works to heal itself so it’s adviseable to rest as much as possible if required. I can give more detailed guidance in the initial consultation as to how Shiatsu may impact on you, taking your specific health picture into consideration.

Having Shiatsu can trigger some emotional reactions,  these are a natural part of the healing process and are a positive sign the Shiatsu is working with the body and mind to re-balance. If you need any additional support to work through emotional triggers you could opt to have an EEEW (Exploring Emotions with Energy Work) session – click here for more details.
